Your body needs to adjust to having GLP-1 receptor activation at levels far above what your gut naturally produces

Common side effects include: Injection site reactions mild pain, redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, typically resolving within a few days Headache usually transient and manageable with standard analgesia Nausea or dizziness particularly in the initial treatment phase Skin reactions including itching, mild rash, or acneiform eruptions Temporary urine discolouration red or orange urine is harmless and expected Diarrhoea or flushing usually mild and self-limiting In patients with severe megaloblastic anaemia, low potassium levels (hypokalaemia) may occur during initial intensive treatment, but this is uncommon in routine maintenance therapy

However, adjustments may be considered if: Glycaemic targets are not achieved : Your doctor may increase to the next available dose strength Intolerable side effects persist : A temporary dose reduction or slower titration may be appropriate Weight loss plateaus (for weight management indications): Dose optimisation may be discussed Renal function changes : Monitoring may be increased, though most GLP-1s don't require dose adjustment Other medications are added or removed : Particularly other glucose-lowering agents Important considerations during dose changes: Never skip doses or double up if you miss an injectionfollow the specific guidance in your patient information leaflet For missed doses, each product has different instructions: Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy): If within 5 days, take as soon as possible
